For Birmingham drivers, that distinction matters when the car will not start, a warning light appears or there is no convenient way to reach a garage. Describe the symptom first; a responsible mechanic can then say whether an on-site visit is appropriate.
Jobs commonly suited to a mobile visit
Depending on the vehicle and the working conditions, mobile work may include:
- routine vehicle servicing, oil and filter changes;
- battery testing and replacement;
- brake inspection and repair;
- diagnostic testing for warning lights, poor running or electrical faults;
- checks before an MOT and repairs after a failed one;
- DPF cleaning and regeneration;
- pre-purchase inspections where the seller permits access.
These are examples, not a promise that every version of every job can be done on every car. The AA's mobile mechanic FAQ similarly describes servicing, brake work and fault finding as mobile services while requiring a suitable location.
When might a garage or recovery be needed?
A vehicle may need a workshop when a repair requires a lift, extensive dismantling, specialist equipment, controlled conditions or a part that cannot be obtained for the visit. Safety also matters: the mechanic must be able to park and work without putting themselves, the customer or passing traffic at risk. Tell the mechanic if the vehicle is on a narrow public road, in a restricted car park or somewhere without working space.
If the vehicle is unsafe to drive, do not drive it to make the appointment easier. GOV.UK says a vehicle must be roadworthy whenever it is used, even if it has a current MOT. Check your vehicle is safe to drive.
What happens if the mechanic finds a different problem?
Symptoms are clues, not a confirmed parts list. A battery warning light, for example, can point to the charging system rather than the battery itself. A diagnostic visit should establish what needs repairing and which work is feasible at the location. Ask for an explanation and a revised price before authorising additional work.
How to prepare for a mobile mechanic visit
Send the registration, make and model, the problem, any warning-light photo and the precise location. Say whether the car starts and whether it is parked on private land with room to work. Remove personal items that block access, but do not dismantle anything unless advised. Keep the key and any locking-wheel-nut key available.
