Is a pre-purchase car inspection worth it?
It can be, when you're about to commit to a used car and want an independent view of its visible and testable condition. It can't guarantee the car will never develop a fault, and it won't reveal every hidden defect. Its value is helping you spot risks, ask better questions and decide whether to buy, renegotiate or walk away before you hand over any money.
It's especially useful when the car is expensive for your budget, the service records are incomplete, past MOTs show advisories, warning lights are on, or the car is too far away for you to visit twice. If a seller refuses a reasonable inspection or won't show the paperwork, that tells you something too.
Why get a used car inspected
Buying from a private seller gives you far fewer legal protections than buying from a dealer. The car has to be as described and roadworthy, but there's no right to reject it because it develops a fault next week. An independent inspection tells you what you're actually buying before you hand over money, and if it finds problems, it gives you something concrete to negotiate with or a good reason to walk away.
Free checks to do before booking
Before paying for an inspection, do these quick checks. They can rule a car out in minutes:
- MOT history. Enter the registration on GOV.UK's free Check MOT history service to see past failures, advisories and recorded mileage. Mileage that goes down between tests is a red flag.
- Logbook (V5C). Check the seller's name and address match the V5C, and that the VIN on the V5C matches the car.
- A vehicle history check. A paid check will show outstanding finance, insurance write-offs and stolen markers, which no physical inspection can reveal.

What we check
Engine
- A cold start, so ask the seller not to run the car before we arrive. Warm engines can hide starting problems and smoke.
- Exhaust smoke, unusual noises, rough running and warning lights
- Oil and coolant condition and levels, and signs of oil mixing with coolant
- Oil, coolant and fuel leaks
- Evidence of cambelt replacement where the engine has one and it's due
Gearbox, clutch and drivetrain
- Clutch bite point, slipping and judder
- Gear changes, crunching and noises, and smoothness on automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes
Brakes, steering and suspension
- Pad and disc condition, and the brakes' performance on the test drive
- Knocks, play in the steering and worn suspension components
Bodywork and underside
- Corrosion on the underside, sills and subframes
- Signs of accident repair: uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, overspray and replaced panels
- Tyres: tread depth against the 1.6mm legal minimum, and uneven wear that points to alignment or suspension problems
Electrics and diagnostics
- A diagnostic scan of the car's control units for stored fault codes
- Signs that fault codes were cleared just before the sale
- Lights, windows, air conditioning, central locking and other features

- Where the seller allows it and the car is insured to drive, a test drive to check how it starts, drives, brakes and handles

What you get afterwards
You get a clear, honest summary, in person or over the phone, and in writing, of everything we found: what's fine, what's worn but acceptable for the car's age, and what needs attention, with a rough idea of what fixing it would involve. That gives you the confidence to buy, a reason to negotiate on price, or a reason to walk away.
What an inspection can't tell you
We'll tell you anything we couldn't check because of access, weather, the car's condition or the seller's permission. An inspection without a lift can't reveal everything under a car, and a fault that only appears after a long drive may not show during the visit.
We're honest about the limits. An inspection is a thorough visual, functional and diagnostic check, but we can't see inside the engine or gearbox without taking them apart, and no inspection can predict every future fault. It also doesn't replace a vehicle history check for finance and write-off records. What it does is greatly reduce the risk of buying a car with expensive problems hiding in plain sight.

It helps to tell the seller an inspection is coming and to ask them not to warm the car up first, because some faults only show on a cold start.
