What we do and don't do

We're not an MOT test centre, so we don't carry out the MOT test itself. We get your car ready for it, and fix anything it fails on, so it goes to the test centre in the best shape, with less risk of an unexpected retest.

Can a mobile mechanic do an MOT at your home?

No. GOV.UK says the MOT test must be carried out at an approved test centre. A mobile mechanic can prepare the car and carry out repairs at your home or workplace, but those services don't produce an MOT certificate. If you see "mobile MOT" advertised, check whether it means a pre-test check, collection for a test at an approved centre, or the test itself, because those are three different things.

Why prepare for an MOT

Many MOT failures are simple things: a blown bulb, a worn wiper blade, a warning light left on. Fixing them before the test costs less than failing, arranging repairs and going back for a retest. Your car's past MOT results, including any advisories, are free to check on GOV.UK's Check MOT history service, and advisories are the best clue to what might fail next.

What we check before the test

  • Lights and signals: every bulb, including number plate lights, indicators and brake lights
  • Driver's view of the road: wipers, washers, and windscreen chips or cracks in the area the wipers clear
  • Tyres: tread depth against the 1.6mm legal minimum, cuts, bulges and the right size and type
  • Brakes: pads, discs, handbrake and brake warning lights
  • Suspension and steering: worn joints, broken springs and excessive play
  • Dashboard warning lights: engine management, ABS, airbag and other faults that would cause a failure
  • Exhaust and emissions: leaks, smoke and, on diesels, a working DPF
  • The rest of the checklist: seatbelts, horn, mirrors, doors, registration plates and fluid leaks

Government MOT figures consistently show lighting and signalling, suspension, brakes and tyres among the most common reasons cars fail.

A pre-MOT check finds problems early, but no check can guarantee a pass, because the official assessment is made by the tester on the day. An old advisory also doesn't prove the car's current condition, so we check the item itself.

If your car has already failed

Send us a photo of the MOT failure sheet by WhatsApp and we'll price the repairs. We fix the failures, and any advisories you want sorting, at your home or workplace, and the car can then go back for its retest. Your test centre will explain its retest rules and fees, which depend on what failed and how soon the car goes back.

Driving with an expired or failed MOT

GOV.UK says whether you can drive after a failure depends on your current MOT and whether dangerous faults were recorded. You can only drive a car without a valid MOT to a pre-booked MOT test or to have MOT failures fixed, and a car with a dangerous defect shouldn't be driven at all. A car must be roadworthy whenever it's driven, even if its previous MOT hasn't run out. If that's your situation, we can come to the car.

When to book

You can have your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date, according to GOV.UK. Booking our check a week or two before the test leaves time to fix anything we find.

Frequently asked questions

Do you carry out MOT tests?

No. The MOT test itself is done by an approved test centre. We prepare the car beforehand and fix failures and advisories afterwards, at your home or workplace.

What does a pre-MOT check cover?

The main things an MOT tester looks at: lights, wipers and windscreen, tyres, brakes, suspension and steering, dashboard warning lights, exhaust and emissions, seatbelts, horn and mirrors.

My car failed its MOT. Can you fix it?

Yes. Send a photo of the failure sheet by WhatsApp for a price. We fix the failures at your home or workplace so the car can go back for its retest.

How early can I get my MOT done?

GOV.UK says you can have your MOT up to a month minus a day before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.

Can a mobile mechanic do an MOT at my home?

No. The MOT test must be carried out at an approved test centre. A mobile mechanic can prepare the car and repair faults at your home or workplace, but that doesn't produce an MOT certificate.

Does a pre-MOT check guarantee a pass?

No. It finds problems early so they can be fixed first, but the official assessment is made by the tester at the test centre.
