Whether you are stuck at home in Birmingham, at work in Sutton Coldfield or elsewhere in the West Midlands, avoid buying a battery simply because the car will not start. A charging fault can leave a new battery flat again.
First: make the location safe
If the vehicle is stranded in a dangerous position, move yourself and passengers to safety where possible and contact appropriate roadside or emergency help. Do not stand in traffic to inspect the car. If you smell fuel, see smoke, notice a hot electrical smell or find a visibly damaged battery, stop trying to start it and seek professional help.
What happens when you turn the key or press Start?
| Symptom | Possible direction | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Lights dim and the engine turns slowly | Low charge, poor connection or another electrical load | That the battery itself is faulty |
| Rapid repeated clicks | Low voltage or electrical connection | That a jump start is the complete repair |
| One click, no crank | Starter, relay, cable or earth connection | That a new starter is definitely needed |
| Engine cranks normally but does not start | Fuel, ignition, sensor or immobiliser problem | That the battery is the cause |
| Starts after a jump, then dies or shows a battery light | Charging-system fault is possible | That the alternator is confirmed without testing |
These are clues only. The car's model, recent work, warning messages and measured voltage all change the diagnosis.
Safe information to collect before calling
Note the registration, exact location, whether the engine cranks, any clicking pattern, dashboard messages and whether the fault appeared suddenly or after the car stood unused. A short video can help if it is safe to record. Tell the mechanic about a recent battery replacement, water ingress or repeated jump starts.
Avoid repeated long cranking attempts; they can drain the remaining battery and complicate diagnosis. Follow the vehicle handbook for any jump-start procedure, especially on vehicles with specific connection points. If you are unsure, leave that work to a trained person.
What should a proper diagnosis establish?
The mechanic may test battery condition and connections, starting-system operation and charging output as appropriate to the symptom. If the engine cranks but does not fire, the investigation moves beyond the battery and starter. The aim is to identify the cause before authorising a part, rather than clear a code or fit the cheapest likely component.
